A little bit about our village
Mosterton is a quaint Dorset village located on the A3066 road linking Beaminster and Crewkerne, and nestled in beautiful countryside.
It isn't to be confused with Misterton, which is only two miles north (whose name derives from the Anglo-Saxon term for “mast-tree farm”).
Mosterton first appeared in Domesday as Mortestorne, meaning “thorn of death”, likely commemorating some grisly deed that took place here in the long forgotten past!
The land passed to the Blount or Blunt family until the end of the fourteenth century, and was later counted amongst the possessions of Sir Thomas More's daughter, who married into the Paulett family which eventually sold it to the Henley family. After that it passed through many hands, including the wealthy Hussey family.
Mosterton lies on the edge of west Dorset and very close to the Somerset border, being equidistant between the historic towns of Beaminster to the south and Crewkerne to the north.
Mosterton enjoys a superb rural aspect surrounded by a mix of farmland and natural downland, with a population of around 700, and amenities consisting of St Mary’s Church, Parrett and Axe Primary school, the Admiral Hood public house and a village shop.
The village hall is centrally located in the Village.
Mosterton Village Hall was established as a charity in 1965 (Registered Charity No 301156) when the site was donated by two well-known residents. The land and hall were donated with the intention of providing a space for leisure time occupation, educational and recreational classes and the general well-being of the people of Mosterton.
Ethos
The Village Hall is run entirely by volunteers and relies on the income from hirers and events run by the committee for its upkeep. The Village Hall has a small number of trustees and a management committee who are elected members of the community.
High Standards
The committee constantly strive to maintain the hall to a high standard to provide a safe, modern, clean, and environmentally sound facility for the community.
Balance Provision
We welcome providers of a wide range of activities and attempt to balance the provision available to suit the needs of the community.
Open to All
Non-Mosterton residents are most welcome to hire the hall .
